Obstacle races and shark week. Look away men.

If you don't menstruate this post is of no interest.

I've noticed from searches on my other bog that women often search for information on obstacle racing while Miss Scarlet is visiting.

Not surprising. Up to 4 hours in mud and water using tradition menstrual proection would freak anyone out.
Buy a menstrual cup.

If you haven't come across the menstrual cup before and you're a tampon user I suggest you look into them. I don't know of anyone who has gone back to tampons after buying a cup. Some links for you...
MeLuna A German Brand. One of the cheapest options because they will waive VAT/GST for Non-European customers.
JuJu Australian Made
Mooncup One of the most established brands. UK based.
In the US I believe that the Diva Cup is the most popular brand.  You can buy them on Amazon.

A menstrual cup won't need changing during a race. It won't leak and it won't get all gross if you get mud up your ether regions. I'm not really sure how women get muddy vaginas but according to the ladies of the internet it happens. Personally I wear undies and long pants and it hasn't been an issue perhaps it's more a problem for the booty shorts girls.

She's crafty! AKA Making a Spartan Spear. Part 1.

I did a silly thing. I signed up for a Spartan Beast in November.

So I need to practice. Which means I need a spear. For some reason that  can't quite fathom spears aren't widely available so I decided to get my craft on. It was actually quite simple and not very expensive. Although since it's not quite finished that might change.
So far I have used:
  • A hacksaw.
  • A decking/patio nail.
  • A drill.
  • A broomstick.
  • Araldite (glue).
First I went to my local hardware shop and bought a broom handle and a patio nail.

I see from the photo the call them Decking Spikes. You don't need to buy the whole box. They sell them individually. The bamboo broom handle was the cheap option but there were also more expensive wooden rake handles that would be a little heavier and were slightly thicker. I'm a cheap skate so I bought the cheaper option.
I also got a new drill bit. Here is the important part.... make sure the drill bit is the same width as the spike. So in this case 9mm.
The spike has a bullet head on it. You need to use your hacksaw to saw that off. Like so.
As you can see in the photo I messed up a bit. My hole was off centre and a bit too big.

So I used my trusty hacksaw to remove an inch and started again.

This time I got it right(ish)

I used Araldite for the next step. Not because it's awesome but because when I raided the warehouse for equipment that's what I found. I was going to mix it up on the milk bottle (because I'm classy like that) but then I decided to just squirt it into the hole and muddle it (those old bar tending skills still come in handy sometimes)

So I muddled the Araldite then jammed my sawn off nail in. It oozed a bit and it got some dog hair in it and it wasn't quite straight but for my purposes I think it's adequate. I used 2 tiny twigs to hold it straighter as it dried.
So here it is thus far. Excuse the mess. I'm an unapologetic slob. there is always something more interesting than housework.

Now I need to figure out some kind of reinforcement for the join. I'm thinking wrapped string or some kind of metal... I'll think it over and hopefully finish it up in the next day or so..

What another blog?!

Time for a new blog.
Not that I have disposed of the old one just that I feel like I need a fresh one...
